Anzhelika Polshchikova: WSF Level 1 Coaching Course or how to become a squash coach in Ukraine

Despite the fact that squash is a popular sport in many countries, in Ukraine this direction is just being formed. I, like hundreds of other players, faced a problem: how to improve my skills and grow as a coach. The answer for me was a course for squash coaches WSF Level 1 Coaching Course, which took place from 17 to 20 September 2020 at the club "Sport Life" Teremka. I hope my experience will help other squash players to improve their skills in the game and start a coaching career.

Why did I choose the WSF Level 1 Coaching Course?

I admit that the main purpose of coaching courses for me was to get a diploma. To work in prestigious clubs, you must have proof of your qualifications and skills.
The first thing that bribed me in the WSF Level 1 Coaching Course was Konstantin Rybalchenko, a teacher and lecturer of the course. Who, if not a multiple winner of championships and the Cup of Ukraine, will be able to teach all the intricacies of coaching ?!

Another important bonus was the fullness of the course. During the training, we analyzed in detail the approach to coaching players of different levels. I learned to identify the needs and goals of the client to effectively build the training process and show the maximum result.

And, finally, the fact that the "possible" became a sure "yes" for me personally - the course was organized by the Squash Federation of Ukraine with the support of the Sports Committee of Ukraine. This immediately increased the level of trust.

How was the WSF Level 1 Coaching Course?

The whole course consisted of theoretical and practical parts. And if you think that theory is boring and uninteresting, then try the WSF Level 1 Coaching Course and you will understand that it is not. Constantine was very accessible and in a relaxed way gave us knowledge, which was immediately put into practice. After each session, we analyzed our mistakes and achievements for maximum results.

At the end of the course we had an exam in several parts: compiling an individual program for clients, conducting individual training and compiling a theoretical part.
Separately, I would like to dwell on the benefits of the course, as they extend far beyond the fullness of learning.

Warm spirit

What is a warm spirit? This is when you record on the court and run with other squash players for delicacies during the break. Another bonus was the team spirit felt by each of the participants. You see that you are not the only one facing difficulties and making mistakes, it helps not to lose faith and continue to work on yourself.
What is the value of the night before the exam, when you and other participants support each other, give advice, share notes and motivation.

Acquired knowledge

Although the training lasted only 4 days, I and the other participants endured a lot. I wanted to learn how to properly explain to my clients "how to play in the back of the court", and at the end of the course I gained many new techniques and tools: "Grip", "Radar", "Relaxed Rhythm" and much more.

New acquaintances

What is of special value to me are new acquaintances. I made friends with players from all over Ukraine (Lviv, Odessa, Dnipro), whom I had only seen at competitions before. Communicating with them and sharing experiences gave me a lot of insights that I use in my work every day.

In addition, this approach helps the development of squash as a sport in general. Due to such initiatives, the level of coaching in the country is increasing, a squash community is being formed, which contributes to the popularization of squash.

As a conclusion

After completing the WSF Level 1 Coaching Course, I can confidently recommend it to other squash players. Coming, first of all, for a fashion certificate, I went with a deeper understanding of the game. There was a motivation not only to develop as a coach, but also to prepare a new breed of squash players in Ukraine. I learned to identify and eliminate not only my mistakes during the game, but also my wards.
Studying gave me much more than a diploma: new friends, experience, as well as incredible motivation to move on, to fall in love with children and adults in squash and to develop this sport in Ukraine.
