European Individual Squash Championship 2022

European Individual Squash Championship 2022

The draws for the 2022 edition of the European Individual Closed Championships have been published.
After a two year break the event will be held at the Sportwerk club in Hamburg, with the first round matches starting on Wednesday.

Both titleholders from the last edition 2019 in Bucharest will be defending their titles. Belgian Nele Gillis, the winner in 2019, is the women’s top seed this year, ahead of here sister Tinne, the champion of the recent World Games. Melissa Alves and Enora Villard, both from France, are seeded 3/4.

The men’s top seed is Swiss Nicolas Mueller, followed by Victor Crouin (FRA), the World Games winner. Germany’s titleholder Raphael Kandra is seeded 3/4 together with Frenchman Sebastian Bonmalais.

Ukraine at the Individual European Championship will be represented by men - Valeriy Fedoruk, Ruslan Sorochinsky, as well as girls - Anastasia Kostyukova, Alina Bushma and Milena Velichko.

In the first round of the continental championship Ukrainian skvoshists will meet with difficult opponents.

In the men's championship, two interesting meetings await us from the start. Valery Fedoruk entered the court against 27-year-old Joel Viksten. It took the experienced Fedoruk 46 minutes to get even with the Swedish national team player with a score of 3:1 (11-9 11-6 9-11 11-6).

Sorochinsky Ruslan was a little less lucky - he will immediately play against 9/16 seeded Spaniard Nilo Vidal at 16:00 (Kyiv time).

Unlike men who just came out to compete, Milena Velichko and Anastasia Kostyukova had the honor to open the European Championship. In the first round, Anastasia Kostyukova announced her serious intentions for this tournament, with a score of 3:2 (7-11, 5-11, 11-8 11-8 11-1), she "destroyed" 18-year-old Moa Bönnemark on the court. As for Milena Velichko, she, as they say, arrived "from the ship to the ball", and with us from the World Championship to the European Championship-2022 only yesterday. Perhaps, fatigue influenced, but nevertheless the junior lost the first round to the Croatian Franka Vidovic.

9/8 seeded Alina Bushma will play at 18:00 (Kyiv time) against 5/8 seeded Spaniard Cristina Gomez. A really interesting match awaits us, because both girls are very strong. Recall that in February this year, Gomez took a record 58th place in the PSA ranking.
