Individual European Championship: Fedoruk is eliminated in qualifying

The individual European championship started in Herentals, in the first match of which Ukraine lost its only representative. Wednesday was a bad day for our squash. The only Ukrainian on the continental forum Valeriy Fedoruk started at this championship with a defeat to the owner of the courts Jonas Snoek - 1: 3 (11: 1, 9:11, 5:11, 7:11).

And Valery started the meeting quite powerfully, taking the first game without any problems. Only in the second game did the Belgian manage to pull himself together, with great difficulty to win it, after which the next two games were already dictated by the opponent. All spectators agreed that in all qualifying matches a good athlete met with a much stronger one, therefore these games did not take so much time.

However, among these five meetings (two more planned ones did not take place due to Dmitry Grishanin's refusal to fight, as well as the injury of the third seeded racket Daryl Selby, which made the confrontation between Przemyslav Atras and Thiago Goryelli automatically turn into a 1/16 final match), two were especially memorable. One of them was the fight between Snoek and Fedoruk, which took place on a glass court unusual for a Ukrainian.

“You could see Snoek was too nervous in the first game,” Belgian journalist Framboise Gommendi wrote on his blog. - Still, he had to play his first game in the 2013/14 season in front of his native stands. So it turned out to be a game of one wicket, especially since Fedoruk looked like a man without nerves. Only in the second game did Jonas coach Mark Burk manage to get his ward to show more aggressive and meaningful squash, which led to a draw in the parties. Snoek managed to take the third game, and this led to the fact that the Belgian simply relaxed. In the fourth game, he was leading 7: 3 and lost concentration. Fedoruk, realizing that he had nothing to lose, threw all his strength into acting out. Five times the Ukrainian fell to the floor in an effort to take the ball, increased the pace of the game and still caught up with the opponent. Snoek managed to save himself in this game only due to the fact that he woke up in time and managed to regain the initiative with a few precise blows, and with this he won the whole game. "

Gommendi also noted the meeting in which the Norwegian Sindre Roaldsoy barely defeated Alexander Shilov. It is with the Russian that Fedoruk will have to meet in the next match of the grid for 33-37 places. If he wins, the Ukrainian will meet with another good friend - Armenian Aik Avetisyan, whom our fans remember from his performances at the Kiev series of open international tournaments "Vremena Goda".

The matches of the 1/16 finals were also held on Wednesday. The offender Fedoruk Snoek surrendered without question to the mercy of the second racket of the tournament, the vice-champion of 2012 Bori Golan, who will now face the Slovak Miroslav Zeller, exhausted by a five-game duel with Portuguese squash player Claudio Pinto. Also, the match between Atras and Goryelli (the one that was supposed to become a qualifying match, don't hurt Selby) lasted for all five games. In another match, the losing side was able to take one game in their favor - this is Czech Ondřej Uherka, who once defended the colors of Petroholding Squash Club at the European Club Championship, resisted the owner of the courts Stefan Kastelein.

Interestingly, the surname Ugerki appeared in the grid at the last moment - he replaced his compatriot Ondřej Ertl here. In the rest of the matches, sensations did not happen - they all ended with a score of 3: 0 in favor of the favorite of the pair.

Individual PC: Goltier - champion, Fedoruk - 33rd

This Saturday in Herentals ended the individual European championship, the winner of which became the French squash player Gregory Goltier for the seventh time. The continental championship, which took place this week in Belgium, ended with an enchanting victory for French squash. Camille Serme won her gold medal first. Interestingly, the Frenchwoman, like a year ago, was seeded second and in the final again met with the first racket of the tournament, two-time European champion Dutch Natalie Greenham.

And just like in 2012, she dealt with her rival in four games. Then came the time to determine the champion of the Old World among men. Gregory Goltier, after dethroning the 2012 champion Olli Tuominen from the throne in the semifinals, entered the game fresh and practically not tired. But his rival Simon Rosner from Germany was not at all easy. In the morning match he was completely exhausted by Dutchman Laurence Jan Angema, who brought matters to a tie-break in three of the four games played. At the same time, Angema exhausted Rosner psychologically - the third game passed cleanly 0:11, which completely calmed the German, and then again began to fire from all the guns.

In general, Rosner entered the final completely exhausted both physically and mentally. However, this did not prevent the German from immediately starting to "cut himself." The memories of the final meeting at the World Championships were still fresh, so fatigue and other nuances faded into the background. Goltier and Rosner fought for every ball. The German squash player did not give up even after losing the second game - he pulled himself together and played one game. But that was where his powers ended. The Frenchman started the fourth game with a snatch 10: 1, which early removed the questions about the winner of the fight.

As for the ex-champion Tuominen, the Finn this time limited himself to a bronze medal. Separately, we note the failure of the silver medalist of last year and the second racket of the tournament, Boris Golan, who finished only fifth.

However, the Ukrainian fan was more interested in the contribution of Ukrainian athletes to this championship. We is in a hurry to rejoice for Valery Fedoruk - after the failure in qualification, the Ukrainian did not give anyone any reason to doubt his skills. Three victories in a row - and Fedoruk is the best of the non-qualifying rounds.

As for a debut at a competition of this level, the result is excellent. By the way, all three victorious meetings fell on confrontations with the only representatives of their countries. First, the Russian Alexander Shilov was passed, commenting on his defeat with the wording “I just didn’t play well”. Then, Armenian Aik Avetisyan, familiar to our fans. And in the match for the 33rd place Fedoruk managed to cope with the player from Austria Lucas Gnauer.

There was one more Ukrainian trace on this championship. At least, assessing his performance at the continental championship (also his debut), Avetisyan did not fail to thank the head coach of Petroholding Squash Club Konstantin Rybalchenko: “Special thanks to Konstantin for putting me in an optimal technical and morale state on the eve of the tournament ... After two weeks of missing training due to illness, it was difficult to catch up, and Rybalchenko helped me a lot with this. The European Championship breathed fresh energy into me, the tournament was great, I was able to watch a large number of matches of the highest level, gain invaluable experience. Now I will strengthen my physical characteristics. "

As for the face-to-face meeting with Fedoruk, the Armenian was extremely pleased with it: "The game with Valery was held in such a friendly atmosphere that the judge even made a remark to us." The European Individual Championship is over. Now all eyes are turned to the international tournament “Four Seasons. Autumn ”, which will be held next weekend in Kiev. For some players, these competitions will at the same time become a preparation for the European club championship, which starts on September 18 in Riccione, Italy - one of the eighteen participants in the championship will be the team of Petroholding Squash Club.
